Here’s what you need to know to ensure a smooth and legal transaction:
- Title Transfer: A title isn't required in the state of Alabama for selling your vehicle if it is older than 2004, but you will need a bill of sale if that is the case. To sell a newer vehicle you will need a title; get a replacement title from the AL DMV.
- License Plate: Alabama plates stay with you, not the car. Remove your plate after the sale of your car, and you should be able to transfer the license plate to another vehicle.
- Bill of Sale: Alabama doesn't require a bill of sale for private car sales but check your specific county requirements. If the vehicle is without a proper title, you will need a bill of sale to transfer it.
- No Liens: Ensure there are no existing liens against your vehicle by checking the status of your title.
